Hiking Information – What to Expect on the Trail

This private volcano hike is designed to be flexible, comfortable, and tailored to your pace. Whether you meet us on location or get picked up in Reykjavík, the timing and experience can be adjusted to fit your needs.

If you’re self-driving, the total experience lasts about 3 to 3.5 hours, including the hike and time at the eruption zone. For those choosing the pickup option, expect around 5.5 to 6 hours, including transfers both ways.

The trail itself is a moderate hike, covering around 8 km (5 miles) round trip, with an elevation gain of roughly 300 meters (984 feet). Your local guide will adjust the pace depending on weather, trail conditions, and your comfort level. There are several stops along the way to rest, take in the views, and learn more about the volcanic history of the area.

From the top, you’ll get panoramic views over the lava fields and craters and — if conditions are right — visible steam or heat vents from recent eruptions. In the winter months, crampons and walking poles are provided to make the hike safe and accessible.

This isn’t a race. Whether you’re here to explore slowly, take photos, or simply enjoy the silence of Iceland’s volcanic wilderness, the hike will be adjusted to suit your style.
