Hiking Information – What to Expect
This private volcano hike is designed to be flexible, comfortable, and tailored to your pace. Whether you meet us on location or get picked up in Reykjavík, the timing and experience can be adjusted to fit your needs.
If you’re self-driving, the total experience lasts up to 4 hours, including the hike and time at the eruption zone.
For those choosing the pickup option, expect a duration of up to 6 hours, including transfers both ways, and a visit to Seltún Geothermal Area and Kleifarvatn Lake as complimentary stops.
The trail itself is a moderate hike, covering approximately 8 km (5 miles) round trip and featuring an elevation gain of around 300 meters (984 feet). Your local guide will adjust the pace depending on weather, trail conditions, and your comfort level. There are several stops along the way to rest, take in the views, and learn more about the area's volcanic history.
From the top, you’ll get panoramic views over the lava fields and craters and — if conditions are right — visible steam or heat vents from recent eruptions. In winter, crampons and walking poles are provided to make the hike safe and accessible.
This isn’t a race. Whether you’re here to explore slowly, take photos, or enjoy the silence of Iceland’s volcanic wilderness, the hike will be adjusted to suit your style.
Is the Fagradalsfjall Volcano Still Active?
Yes. The Reykjanes Peninsula has experienced repeated eruptions since 2021, and the landscape continues to evolve. Authorities monitor the area daily, and access is only permitted when conditions are safe. This private tour always follows official safety guidance.
