Is the Fagradalsfjall Volcano Active?
-
The Fagradalsfjall volcanic system is part of an active geological zone on the Reykjanes Peninsula, and it continues to be monitored daily by Icelandic authorities. Volcanic activity here is natural and unpredictable, and conditions can change over time, but safety always comes first in Iceland.
-
Access to the volcano area is only allowed when it is officially declared safe. Roads, hiking trails, and viewpoints are opened or closed based on clear safety rules, gas monitoring, and real-time geological updates. For travelers, this means you can still enjoy the experience while professionals handle the risk management behind the scenes.
-
Our tours always follow the latest guidance, and if conditions change, we adjust the route to the safest and best available areas. Whether there is visible lava or not, the Fagradalsfjall region offers dramatic new lava fields, powerful volcanic scenery, and one of the most fascinating landscapes in Iceland to explore.
-
When lava is visible and safe, we take you as close as conditions allow. When it is not, we focus on Iceland’s newest lava fields, craters, and dramatic viewpoints.
